In any case, close games have been the norm for the Tigers in 2010 - at least when they’re not playing schools from the Sun Belt Conference.
Auburn improved to 2-0 in the SEC last week with a 37-34 victory over Kentucky. That marked the fourth single-digit win of the season for the Tigers, who are now the highest-ranked team in their conference.
TIght games have also been common for Arkansas (4-1 overall, 1-1 SEC) . The Razorbacks are coming off a 24-17 non-conference win over Texas A&M. And in their previous two contests, they fell to then-No. 1 Alabama 24-20 and defeated Georgia 31-24.
Something else Auburn and Arkansas have in common is a strong, talented quarterback. The Tigers are led by Cameron Newton, and Arkansas by Ryan Mallett.
The Arkansas Offense
Mallett ranks second in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision with 349.6 passing yards per game. The 6-foot-6, 240-pound junior has connected on 69.3 percent of his throws for 1,748 yards and 13 touchdowns, with six interceptions. He’s enabled coach Bobby Petrino’s Razorbacks to average 30.0 points and 462.8 yards per game.
A deep cast of receivers is led by Greg Childs (28 catches, 363 yards, 3 TDs) and Joe Adams (21 receptions, 408 yards, 3 TDs). Tight end D.J. Williams has added 22 catches for 259 yards, and running back Ronnie Wingo has 15 catches for 166 yards and a trio of scores. He’s also run for a TD.
The running game as a whole, hasn’t done much. The Hogs have managed only 108.8 yards per game on 3,7 yards per rush. Knile Davis (203 yards, 1 TD) and Broderick Green (192 yards, 1 TD) have been the leaders.
Arkansas has allowed nine sacks - not too bad when considering the number of passes - and has turned the ball over 11 times.
The Auburn Offense
LIke Mallett, the 6-6, 250-pound Newton is a big guy. But the junior’s style contrasts deeply with his free-slinging Arkansas counterpart.
Newton is a powerful runner with deceptive speed - he leads his team with 672 rushing yards and nine TDs. He’s also completed 64.8 percent of his passes for 1,138 yards and 12 touchdowns, with five interceptions. His passing efficiency rating of 180.73 places him second in the FBS, behind only Kellen Moore of Boise State.
As a result, the Tigers are recording 36.7 points and 483 yards per game. They’ve committed 10 turnovers, but given up only seven sacks.
Coach Gene Chizik has plenty of weapons other than Newton. The running back corps features promising freshman Michael Dyer (390 yards, 2 TDs), small sophomore speedster Onterio McCalebb (342 yards, 2 TDs) and pass-catching ace Mario Fannin (1 TD rushing, 2 TDs receiving).
A swift contingent of receivers is sparked by Darvin Adams (21 catches, 385 yards, 2 TDs) and Terrell Zachery (17 receptions, 252 yards, 1 TD). Emory Blake has caught three TD passes, and tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen has reeled in two.
The Arkansas Defense
The Razorbacks have been very stubborn, allowing 15.0 points and 302.4 yards per game. They’ve forced nine turnovers and posted a healthy total of 17 sacks.
Ample pressure has been applied by the likes of end Jake Bequette (5 tackles for loss, 4 sacks), linebacker Anthony Leon (8 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks), end Tenarius Wright (3 sacks) and safety Ross Rasner (5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks).
Linebacker Jerry Franklin is the top tackler with 37, including 4.5 behind the line of scrimmage. Leon has made 35 stops, and linebacker Jerico Nelson has 30.
The secondary includes cornerback Ramon Broadway (6 pass breakups), safety Rudell Crim (23 tackles, 2 interceptions) and safety Tramain Thomas (23 tackles, 2 interceptions). Sophomore tackle DeQuinta Jones (18 tackles) brings muscle to the interior line.
The Auburn Defense
Auburn’s been very good vs. the run, giving up only 95.7 yards per game. Pass defense has been somewhat leaky, with opponents managing 239.2 yards. Overall, the Tigers are allowing 334.8 yards, along with 21.3 points.
Extremely impressive has been tackle Nick Fairley, who’s made 12.5 tackles for loss. He’s recorded 25 total stops - including five of his team’s 15 sacks sacks. And he has 12 quarterback hurries in addition to an interception.
His mates up front include end Antoine Carter (5.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks), tackle Zach Clayton (5 tackles for loss) and freshman end Corey Lemonier (2 sacks). The linebacking corps includes Josh Bynes (34 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss) and Darren Bates (32 tackles).
Safety Zac Etheridge leads the Tigers with 38 tackles, safety Aairon Savege has contributed 33, and cornerback Demond Washington has 23 - including 4.5 for losses. What the Tigers can use is a few more picks. They’ve forced 11 turnovers, but only four have come via interceptions.
Special Teams
The Arkansas kicking game is sound. Zach Hooker has hit five of six field goal attempts, with a long of 48 yards. Dylan Breeding is averaging 44.0 yards per punt.
The return game hasn’t been anything to write home about, although Adams has had some nice moments running back punts. And Arkansas has been sharp on punt coverage, allowing only 4.5 yards per return.
Auburn has an accurate foot in Wes Byrum, who’s 8-for-11 on field goal attempts. That total includes a 24-yarder to beat Kentucky. The Tigers, though, are averaging only 37.5 yards per punt, and they haven’t really broken out on returns. Coverage, though, has been pretty solid.
