BCS Predictions: 2010 Auburn Tigers

The hiring of Gene Chizik as head coach of the Auburn Tigers may have been met with plenty of controversy and skepticism in college football predictions but it ended quickly when Auburn broke out of the gate with a 5-0 record and finished 8-5 straight up, 6-6 against the spread in college football odds, and with an Outback Bowl win over Northwestern. For many Tiger fans, the highlight of the season was a loss, however, as Auburn had hated Alabama on the ropes late in the Iron Bowl before the Crimson Tide rallied to win 26-21 and salvage their eventual national championship season. Online sportsbooks have the 2010 Auburn Tigers as 40-1 longshots in 2011 BCS odds to win the championship with a regular season win total at 8.5 OVER (-135).

Chizik was celebrated as a savior by the end of the season at Auburn and nobody was upset that he got the gig anymore. Chizik further distinguished himself in recruiting season by hauling in a top 5 class. With all of the positive vibes coming from Auburn, online sportsbooks have opened with the Tigers +800 as college football betting favorites in 2011 BCS odds to win the SEC conference. Auburn returns 7 starters on offense and 8 on a defense that had a big jump in points allowed from 18 per game in 2008 to 28 per game in 2009. Senior linebacker and top tackler Josh Bynes will return as will the other top 5 tacklers.

The offense is led by spread guru Gus Malzahn as the coordinator, so transition to junior quarterback Cameron Newton should be seamless. The top 4 receivers will all be back led by junior Darvin Adams, who had 997 yards and 10 touchdowns last year. Senior kicker Wes Byrum is also back after going 15-16 on field goals last year. The schedule could not be more favorable with the toughest games at home, except for the season finale at Alabama.
