One of the first challenges for an out-of-state student preparing to start his or her first semester in Auburn University is to find an apartment for rent in Auburn AL, ideally somewhere close to the campus and well within a university student’s budget. Proximity to cheap restaurants, malls, and entertainment is definitely a plus. Availability really shouldn’t be a problem, Auburn University being one of the largest universities in AL.
Checking out what was available for my son’s impending move halfway across the country, I came across these promising apartments, and I hope the list, as well as my comments, is helpful to other parents and/or students who have a similar task to accomplish.
University Heights at W. Longleaf Drive Auburn AL has multi-bed units that come in at less than $400 (I believe this is a 4-bedroom unit, so privacy would be at a minimum, both potentially good and bad when it comes to student culture). It’s a bargain as far as Auburn apartments go, and as such a lot of university students stay here. It is described as “premiere luxury apartments for students,” but from what I’ve read, the word luxury is very different when applied to students as it is when us ordinary folk use it.
Personally, I’m leaning towards Two 21 Armstrong in Armstrong St, Auburn AL (#221, hence the name). It is nice, cozy-looking and way more than complete with amenities. It is pricey though, at $700-800 being the lowest rent (1-bed/1-bath). I can’t complain location-wise since it really is just a hop away from the university campus; walk a couple blocks and you’re there. Maybe the zero-required budget for the daily commute will make up for the cost.

It’s funny but the first thing I read about the Patio Apartments in Auburn AL was a complaint about stray cats. Anyway, it is now known as Courtyards At Auburn and if you read through this it will seem to make sense why the name had to be changed. Well whatever, if you find it named Patio Apartments or Courtyards At Auburn, if you’re at North Dean Road then it’s probably the apartment building I’m talking about.
It connects like Legos, and the stray cats are probably there because of the garbage. A truck comes by once in a while, but not enough so that the garbage collects enough to be a nuisance before it gets hauled away. And it’s just a guess, but I think the trash collectors stay away because the environment isn’t so safe. I’ve read that tenants are afraid of going alone into the laundry room or the gym because some of the apartment residents or the visitors look like they are involved in criminal activity. It wouldn’t be fair to judge tenants by the way they look, but it is said that the local police know that there is some interesting activity that goes on there.
It has a swimming pool that no one uses because it isn’t kept clean, and with the garbage and the cats it sure sounds like Patio Apartments/Courtyards At Auburn AL must be a dump. However a lot of Auburn University students stay there as the rent is quite low. Auburn is really a pleasant city to live in as all of AL is I think, so I suppose that if your budget is limited, and as long as you keep a level head and your eyes open, this wouldn’t be a bad place to stay.

Village West Apartments
1449 Richland Road
Auburn, Alabama 36832
Village West Apartments in Auburn could very well be a student’s home away from his or her home.
Village West claims to offer a one-of-a-kind extra effort services to their tenants. However, I have yet to a find a review of this apartment community on the internet to validate if they prove their claim.
Available units in this apartment community are from one bedroom / one bathroom ones to 3 bedroom / 2 bathroom units with lots of storage spaces. Amenities are practically the same with other apartments such as fitness center, swimming pool, cable and the like.
Cats and dogs are allowed but there are number restrictions and a non refundable pet fee. This apartment seemed to charge a lot like administrative fee, application fee and security deposit worth a full month’s rent.
They charge an individual lease per bedroom so tenants would not be burdened if their roommate remiss in rent obligation.
