The Auburn University Tigers has put the previous season woes behind under new coach Gene Chizik.

The Tigers’ 5 - 0 start in a great indication that all is well in the camp. The Associated Press did noticed. AP has recognized the rejuvenated AU with a no. 17 ranking.

“Obviously we’re happy to get the recognition,” Chizik said Sunday. “The kids have worked really hard and the coaches have worked really hard.”

auburn alabama freshman blasts state of college housing

On this cold day John Tibbets, a University Of Auburn Freshman, is an angry young man. The Psychology major is riling against the conditions of apartments in Auburn Alabama, some of which he described as “decrepit and sorely lacking in any form of management or political will”.

After staying in several apartments in Auburn AL, Tibbets declares that “it is either you can’t get to sleep because some frat-rats are using the next apartment to party, or there’s an aspiring rock star using his unit as a recording studio. Either way, you cant sleep or study”.

Complaining to the management doesn’t help a bit says Tibbets. “I have put in my informal and formal complaints but there was never any action taken. Worse, he has been switching from apartment to apartment complex with the same experience term after term “it’s like ground-hog day- the movie, except instead of waking up in the same bed and to the same bad day, I’m waking up in another bad apartment semester after semester”.

Sick of being snubbed and bullied by management and other “party-students”, Tibbets set out to find the best student apartments in Auburn Alabama and create an honest-to-goodness website that addresses needs of “non-party students “. You know… the kind of student that actually wants to graduate.

the first time (and some I learned on my own):
- Check for water pressure and electricity while the landlord is in the room with you. See if water in the sink drains quickly. Check for loose wires, loose electrical outlets or fixtures. If there are problems, ask why, and if it will be fixed.
- Check for holes in the walls, floors, ceiling. Especially feel for soft spots covered up by the carpet or wallpaper.
- Check that doors lock well, windows seal completely.
- Check for water stains, fire damage, rotten wood. These could be symptoms of a bigger problem.
- Make a list of all the problems you see, and the landlord’s promises regarding them. Have him sign the paper.
- Be very clear about who will pay for needed repairs.
- You are either a “gut feel” person or you’re not. If you are, then watch for that gut reaction when you check the place out. I firmly believe that you can train your “gut,” or yourself to work with your “gut” to a point that you can trust it. Sometimes you get a strong feel for an apartment being either “right” or “wrong” for you. This, taken with all the other more pragmatic pointers in this article should point you right.

Woodmere Creek Apartments are located at 779 Woodmere Creek Drive, Birmingham Alabama, and one thing they try to convince you of is that they are in the best location in Birmingham. That of course depends on what you are moving to the city for, and in my case it was to work at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I am not a student so I wasn’t comfortable with taking one of those usual apartments/dormitories that are targeted at students, although I was operating on a low budget so this info can also be used by students starting out at the University or an employee transferring for a job in the area. Rent for a studio type unit with one bathroom at the Woodmere Creek Apartments start at $620. Other units which are bigger and have more bedrooms and bathrooms go up to almost a grand, but being single I found the studio-type to be plenty comfortable for me. This is certainly not the cheapest you can get in Birmingham, but for the area around the city center and the University, this is about as cheap as apartments get and still be livable.
Next to cost of rent, the commute was the next most important consideration to me, and thankfully it is just a 15 minute drive down I-65 to get to the University. Other things I enjoyed or found very useful at the Woodmere Creek Apartments are the pool and the gym, and maintenance of the facilities was quite good in general. I recommend it!

Stonecrest at Double Oak Mountain in Stonecrest, Birmingham AL is a higher-priced apartment community relative to the mass-housing type complexes popular with students and low-income tenants, but the extra cost might be worth it to you, especially considering the wide spread of available apartment types and neighborhoods in such a big city as Birmingham.
Although not quite downtown, Stonecrest at Double Oak Mountain Apartments is still near enough to the city center that places like Samford University, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham Southern College, and a host of country clubs, golf courses, restaurants, shopping centers, hospitals, and other places of necessity are an easy drive away. Commuting is also convenient, with a main road almost at your doorstep.
The apartment is located within a good, quiet neighborhood, an important consideration as there are places within the city, mostly at the outskirts, in which the crime rate is quite high. Rent starts at just under $700 for a 1-bedroom/1-bathroom unit but the units are quite large, well-appointed, and nice-looking. A consistent complaint is that the walls are a bit thin and by the noise you are sure to know what your neighbors are doing. The staff, and maintenance and services get average ratings, meaning sometimes they are good and sometimes they are slow or ineffectual, which is par for the course for apartments everywhere. If you remember that Stonecrest at Double Oak Mountain is an apartment community and not Club Med, the experience tenants have is generally pleasant.

Hunter Ridge Apartments in Hunter Ridge Drive, Birmingham AL is located between St. Vincent’s East and Birmingham Race Course, and being so close to I-59, Birmingham landmarks and places of interest like the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham Southern College, Oak Mountain State Park, Birmingham International Airport, and many other parks, country clubs, hospitals and shopping centers are within a relatively easy drive or commute. This fact makes Hunter Ridge almost ideal for students going to one of Birmingham’s many schools, or any residents requiring a daily commute. That is, it would be ideal except for some problems that seem to stem from the apartment management itself.
Hunter Ridge Apartments also happens to be one of those places with nothing but bad reviews on the net. I’ve read complaints of harassment by the management of even by maintenance men, apparently a pool cleaner told off some residents because they were using the pool, and some have said that the maintenance guys go through the residents’ trash and the landlady enters the units when the residents are at work. There have even been allegations of thefe according to one review. In general the staff is described as rude and ignorant, and as having no respect for their tenants of even for Alabama State Laws!
Aside from these, I see very few complaints about the units themselves, and for sure the buildings look pretty decent from the road. Sometimes it feels as if the complaints were all written by someone who has a bone to pick. In the end, my advice is to look for yourself, Hunter Ridge Apartments might be a hidden gem!

One of the better apartments that are available to a student or a small family moving to Birmingham AL is Sunrise Pointe Apartments at Sunrise Circle. As to location, Sunrise Pointe is pretty near ideal, being very near Eastwood Mall/Century Plaza. Lawson Stadium is just the nearest of many stadiums and sports oriented entertainment facilities like Birmingham Golf Course, Roebuck Municipal Golfcourse, Birmingham Race Course, and a number of country clubs.
For the student, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Samford University are both an easy commute away, and public transportation is not a problem with the main roads almost at the apartment’s doorstep. Other schools located in the area include Putnam Middle School, Shades Valley Tech Academy-Dabbs, Jefferson International Baccalaureate, Spring Valley School, and many others. As for hospitals and clinics, St. Martin’s in the Pines is less than a mile away.
At $450 for a 1-bed/1-bath flat, or $520 for 2 beds, there are certainly cheaper rentals than Sunrise Pointe Apartments. But considering all the nice extras you get with it, along with well-kept grounds, a clubhouse, pool, plus the usual necessities and amenities such as laundry, disposal, frostfree refrigerators, available cable television, large closets, air conditioning, and some paid utilities, Sunrise Pointe Apartments might just be one of the best deals going at Birmingham AL. They even accept pets that are not over 20 pounds in weight, a feature that is getting harder and harder to find among rental apartments.

Central Garden Apartments is in South Park Drive Birmingham AL, and unless it really is that important to you to live in an address that says “South Park” like the hit animated series, you should do a lot of research first before moving here. Firstly, Central Garden Apartments is in Birmingham AL, the fictional South Park is supposed to be somewhere in CO.
Most worrisome of all the descriptions of the neighborhood around Central Garden Apartments are the random gunshots one may hear throughout all hours of the day and night. Apparently, robberies are quite common and I’m not very sure but I would think a student with a limited budget for rent would be better off here than a family with kids. The student would better be able to keep a low profile and watch out for himself. Then again, if one could pick other, safer apartments in Birmingham, why take the chance and live here?
Apparently the place used to be a slum that has improved over the years, therefore cost of living in general is quite low. Rent is very affordable at Central Gardens, although one major complaint about the building is the difficulty in keeping the units warm during the cold months. The walls are minimally insulated, the structure is drafty, and all your savings from the low rent might go to heating bills anyway.
All in all Central Garden Apartments is a pretty dismal place to live in according to the reviews on the web, and really, seeing that there are many more choices in Birmingham, I fail to see why one would settle here.
